Materials
- A jar with a lid
- 1/3 cup hot water
- Ice cubes
- Hairspray
Step 1: Pour hot water into jar and swirl it around to warm up the jar sides.
Step 2: Turn lid upside down and place it on top of the jar. Then place a few ice cubes on the lid for about 20 seconds.
Step 3: Remove lid and quickly spray a bit of hairspray into the jar and replace the lid with ice still on top. You should be able to see clouds form.
Step 4: When a good amount of clouds have formed, remove the lid to watch the cloud escape.
Explanation:
Water vapor forms when warm water is added into the jar. The vapor then rises to the top of the jar, coming into contact with cold air formed by the ice cubes. Due to the cold air, water vapor will condense as it cools. Clouds can only form if water vapor condenses onto something; for example, in nature, water vapor could condense onto dust particle and air pollution. In this experiment, these particles were represented by the hairspray.
